This is a book of reference for the use of proprietors of country stores and re- tail traders everywhere, directors, mana- gers, secretaries, accountants, and senior bookkeepers of stores, public accountants and their staffs. There is described in de- tail a system of accounting and office routine for stores. The methods advo- cated have stood the test of practical working, and are based on the author's experience of the best way to adapt a system of accounting to the peculiar con- ditions of a store, especially a country store, where it is not always possible to have expert or experienced men in. charge of the office. The text, in conjunction with the appendix, will enable a book-, keeper, with a knowledge of the principles of double entry, to quite easily instal a system either wholly or in part. In the appendix is a complete set of book for a country store, with specimen entries for one month, covering all the usual trans- actions of a store. These illustrate all matters dealt with in the text. So as to fully ensure this, the month's transaction are taken as a financial period (usually six months or a year in actual practice), the private ledger is closed, and a trading account, profit and loss account, and bal- ance sheet prepared. The nature of the various accounts, and the many uses to which they can be put, if intelligently understood, and criticised, is ; clearly ex- plained. 'The author has achieved his purpose, and provided a most useful hand book.
