Man Fined A petty officer of the R.A.N. was fined £10 in the Special Court yesterday for having sold 175 American dollars without the authority of the Common-wealth Bank. The petty officer, Arthur Vivian Bottrell, of Hastings Parade, Bondi, was ordered to forfeit £70 Australian and 175 American dollars. He undertook to surrender another 825 American dollars to the Commonwealth Bank. It was the first prosecution of its kind under the Banking (Foreign Exchange) Regulations. Nathaniel Patrick Craig, Cus- toms ' officer, said information was received that Bottrell had American dollars in his posses- sion for sale. A sum of £70 was given to Customs officer R. R. Kenny to purchase dollars from Bottrell. On April 13, Kenny went to Bottrell's home and paid him £70 Australian for 175 American dollars. BOUGHT IN HONG KONG Craig said Bottrell told him he had purchased the dollars in Hong Kong from moneylenders. Mr. J. M. Brennan, for the Crown, said Bottrell had paid 5/ each for the dollars and had sold them for 8/ each. Bottrell, who pleaded guilty, said in court he did not know he was doing wrong in selling the dollars.
