MURWILLUMBAH, January 11.
"I am doing this for the sake of your wife and family," said Mr. W. C. Geikie, the Police Magistrate, in the Murwillum- bah Police Court yesterday, when binding Albert James Rutherford over to be of good behaviour for 12 months after he had pleaded guilty to a charge of false pretences. Rutherford was charged with having on January 2 falsely pretended to Samuel A. Munsie that a cheque for £5, purporting to be drawn by D. G. Ruther- ford on the Murwillumbah branch of the Bank of New South Wales, was genuine, and thereby obtained £5 from Munsie with intent to defraud. Mr. A. A. R. Hynes (Messrs. Hynes and Elliott) appeared for the defendant. Defendant's solicitor stated that drink was the, cause of his client's downfall. At the conclusion of the case a prohibition order was issued against defendant.

LISMORE, Tuesday.
Albert James Rutherford pleaded guilty to a charge of false pretences by obtaining £4 from Henry David Cohen, Jeweller, by means of a valueless cheque. He was bound over for two years on a bond of £40.

Albert James Rutherford, 43, and Arthur James Edwards, 27, at the Lismore Police Court, were committed for trial on a charge of false pretences. It was alleged that they had attempted to obtain goods from S. McLean's store with a valueless cheque for £5.

GRAFTON, Wednesday.
A sentence of three months' gaol was im- posed by Judge Clancy on Albert James Rutherford (43), who had been found guilty on the previous day of having attempted to obtain, by a valueless cheque, a pair of trousers and £2/15/ from Thomas Kenny, of Lismore. Judge Clancy said the offence merited severe punishment, but the Jury had recommended mercy.

Sydney, Monday
Albert James Rutherford, 61, of Great Buckingham st., Redfern, was sentenced to six months' gaol at Redfern Court today on a charge of illegal betting.
He was alleged to have laid bets in the Surry Club Hotel, Redfern, last Saturday.
Police said Rutherford had two previous convictions for illegal betting.
