Sydney Harbor Disaster
DOUBLE-DECKER LAUNCH CAPSIZES
Nineteen Drowned : Mostly Young Girls
Tragic Farewell to American Sailors
Sydney was giving the officers and
crew of the visiting American war-
ship, Louisville, last Sunday what
was intended to be a pleasurably
memorable send-off as the ship was
moving down Sydney Harbor on its
way to Melbourne; but misfortune in
tervened and changed the merry fare
well into a disaster that will long
remain a sad memory both for Syd-
ney people and the American sailors.
When the Louisville left Woolloo=
mooloo Bay at 2 p.m., bands were
playing, hundreds were cheering on
the wharf and from launches, and
many girls were crying at the loss
of American sailor friends.
The complement of 600 in the war-
ship, all in white uniforms, were lined
about the ship, and as it turned up
the harbour towards the Heads
dozens of small craft followed.
Amongst them was C. Rosman's
Rodney, a double-decker pleasure
launch, 60ft. long, capable of holding
220 passengers. Exactly how many
were on board could not be ascer-
tained.
Girls formed the majority of the
passengers, and they crowded on the
top deck.
The police launch, Cambrian, with
36 members of the Police Band, met
the Louisville as it turned out of
Wooloomooloo Bay, and as the war=
ship proceeded slowly up the harbour
the band played lively airs.
Within half an hour the Louisville
had turned Bradley's Head towards
the Heads, and the Police Band had
just finished playing "Auld Lang
Syne," while the ratings lined the
rails of the warship, waving their
caps in appreciation of the rousing
send off being accorded them.
Warning Not Heeded
Before the ship had rounded the
point the Rodney had circled it once,
still with most of its passengers on
the top deck, cheering and calling to
the crew. Rosman had charge of the
launch, and when he indicated that
he proposed changing to the other
side of the warship, most of those on
the top deck crowded to one side, giv-
ing the launch such a dangerous list
that naval men on Garden Island
shouted to those on board as it
passed, 'Be careful or you'll capsize.'
An answer came back from the
launch that the occupants were not
worrying.
Ten minutes later the Rodney cap-
sized, throwing everyone on board
into the water.
The police launch was on the other
side of the warship, but four blasts
from the Manly ferry, the captain of
which had seen the launch capsize,
made every policeman realise that the
blasts were an urgent call for help.
The Cambrian went full speed to
the other side of the warship, and
the police were confronted with a
scene which they believe was without
parallel in Sydney Harbour, except
when the ferry steamer, Greycliffe,
was sinking after being rammed. The
Rodney had turned on its side, and
its passengers were struggling in the
water.
Women were screaming, "Save
me!" and men and children were
struggling in a confused mass, clutch-
ing at each other in frantic attempts
to keep afloat.
Some sailors jumped overboard
fom the Louisville, but the call was
Riven to the crew to stand to their
stations, the ship was stopped i-
mediately, and two motor-boats and
four whaleboats were lowered. For-
tunately all members of the Police
Band had been trained in first aid to
the drowned, and they were at work
immediately on the unconscious
people dragged aboard the launches
which had now gathered round.
The drowned whose bodies were re-
covered shortly after the Rodney
sank were:

There are other people in this site, for various reasons, some not related at all. Some are married into my family, some I once thought were related and, turns out, they are not.

On the Aborigines: Unfortunately, I can only place global statements not he web pages. The aborigines I am aware of are in the Blackman Line and are from the children of James Blackman and Elizabeth Harley.
