Mr. R. A. Hardwicke, S.M.,
at Newcastle Court yesterday,
fined, an electrician a total of
on six charges of theft,
and two of having goods in
custody reasonably suspected
of having been unlawfully ob-
tained. The electrician is
Alfred William Cramp, 53.
Cramp was fined £10 for
having knowingly had in his
custody at a house in Holt
street, Mayfield East, on Aug-
ust 3, 200lb of scrap lead,
150lb of scrap brass, 17 gal-
lons of oil, six gallons of
diesel fuel, two gallons of red
lead, 17 electric light bulbs,
and an oxy-acetylene burner,
reasonably suspected of hav-
ing been unlawfully obtained,
and £ 10 on a similar charge
involving a 2-gallon tin of
paint, two oil cans, two chip-
ping hammers and a piece of
canvas.
Theft Charges
He was fined £20 for hav-
ing stolen, between April 14
and June 27, 1947, a fire ex-
tinguisher valued at £5, the
property of the State Dock
yard; and £12 on each charge
of having stolen fire extin-
guisher fluid valued at
the property of the
dockyard, between July 1 and
31, 1953; two tins of Horlicks
tablets and a chocolate, valued
at £1, the property of a per-
son unknown, between Novem-
ber 24, 1952, and February 12.
1953; 55 yards of electric light
lead and three light holders,
valued at £5, the property of
the dockyard, between Febru-
ary 1 and August 3, 1953; a
crane battery, valued at £6,
the property of the dockyard,
between April 1 and April 30,
1953; and a paint scraper, and
a 4-gallon tin of body topping
composite valued at £9, the
property of the dockyard, be-
tween July 1 and 31, 1951.
Police said Cramp had been
employed at the dockyard
since 1945. Dockyard autho-
rities estimated the loss
through theft of scrap metals
at thousands of pounds a
year.
The Police Prosecutor (Ser-
geant Lithgow) said Cramp,
who lived with his wife, had
two adult children, and cared
for four State wards. The
Child Welfare Department
would be advised of Cramp's
convictions.
Cramp was given two
months to pay.
