Hedley Patricius Carroll, a relief officer, employed by the Railway Commissioners, stated that he was in charge of the Black- town station on April 30 and had the whole of the staff under his suprevision. The booking office was open until 6.33 p.m. on that night. He was extra careful on that occasion, as there was a new staff at the' station.
