Magisterial Inquiry.
MR. H. O'BRIEN, coroner, held a magisterial
inquiry this morning upon the body of Char-
lotte Winifred Balgowan, wife of John
Balgowan, grazier of the Fish River, who
died suddenly yesterday afternoon at her
residence in Faithfull-street south. From
the evidence adduced it appeared that de-
cased was a native of Goulburn and was
thirty-eight years of age. She had for some
years suffered from an affection of the heart
and difficulty of breathing. The medical
evidence left no doubt that death was caused
by syncope from weakly action of the heart,
and the finding was in accordance with this
testimony. Deceased leaves three children.
Her husband, who was about selling his
place, is on his way from Burrowa to Goul-
burn, and deceased had been living here
about three mouths, it being Mr. Balgowan's
intention to reside here on completion of
the sale.

AWFULLY SUDDEN DEATH
MR. HAROLD O'Brien, the Goulburn coroner, held
a magisterial inquiry yesterday morning at the
residence of Mr. John Balgowan, Faithfull-street,
touching the death of Charlotte Winifred Balgowan,
who died suddenly on Thursday evening.
William Arthur Evans deposed: I am employed
at the railway ; I am brother of the deceased; she
was born in Goulburn and was 38 years of age ; she
was married to John Balgowan, of the Fish River,
grazier ; she has left three children; she has
always for 17 or 18 years complained of her chest
and Dr. Morton said her heart was weak.
To the police : My sister was of steady habits as
far as I know ; the reason that she came to live in
Goulburn was that her husband was selling the
place, but the bargain was not completed; the
deceased and her husband lived on good terms; he
intended coming to Goulburn when he sold the
place; I heard my sister had been laid up; I came
round yesterday morning and asked the little girl
how her mother was and she said she was much
better.
Catherine Costello deposed: I am the wife of
James Costello, of Goulburn, labourer; I have
known the deceased for the last 15 years; I think
she has been living in Goulburn for about three
months; I have only known her to complain of her
lungs and bad breathing lately; I last saw her
alive last Wednesday night; she was then ailing
and was in bed; I changed her and left her com-
fortable for the night; she complained of weakness;
I was called about a quarter to 4 yesterday after
noon and told that she was very ill; I came up
immediately, opened the door, and found her dead on
the floor; I don't know that she was up yesterday;
a little boy, whose name I do not know, came for me.
To the police : Dr. Hollis was at once seat for;
as far as I know deceased was a temperate woman;
on Tuesday I first knew her to be ill, and she sent
for me; she complained of pains across her chest,
and was very weak and unable to sit up while I
made her bed.
Ann O'Neill deposed : I am the wife of Patrick
O'Neill, labourer, of Goulburn ; I have known de-
ceased about three years; she had very good health,
but complained of weakness, and said her lungs
were bad ; last Tuesday I called in to see her, and
she was complaining then of weakness and pains
across her stomach; I saw her yesterday morning
and gave her a drink and asked her how she felt,
and she said she felt better ; that was the last I
saw of her alive.
To the police : I never saw the sign of liquor on
her.
Dr. Hollis deposed : Yesterday afternoon about
half-past 5 I was called to see deceased ; I found
her lying upon the floor covered with a quilt ; on
examination I found she was dead ; I informed her
friends of the fact ; I recommended the coroner to
be informed of the matter ; she was cold at the
time I arrived and appeared to have been dead
probably three quarters of an hour ; I did not ex-
amine the body, but I did the face, and there were
no marks of violence ; I can simply conjecture the
cause of death ; from what I saw and what I have
heard I should say the cause of death was failure
of the heart ; I never saw her before professionally.
Robert McKillop, Government medical officer,
deposed : About three years ago I attended deceased
for three or four weeks ; she was then suffering from
almost incessant vomiting and fainting fits I
believe I have only seen her once since that time,
but not professionally; I have heard the evidence
given to-day, and basing my opinion on the evi-
dence and on my knowledge of the deceased I
believe the cause of death to be syncope from a
weakly acting of the heart.
To the police: When I saw her professionally
she complained of her heart and the fainting was
caused by this. In fact, she was so bad then that I
thought that she was going to die.
Mr. O'Brien's finding was one of death from
natural causes, to wit, syncope from a weakly
acting heart.
