POLICE COURTS.
At Grafton, yesterday, before the P.M., John Selman, on remand, was charged with stealing a horse, saddle, and bridle, the property of Henry Zietsch.
Constable Richards stated that on the 11th instant he, in company with Constable Smith, proceeded to the residence of Mr. M'Intosh in Arthur-street, saw accused, and asked him what he did with Zietsch'e horse, saddle and bridle. He said he borrowed the horse on Saturday to go to Lawrence, and gave it to a boy who was riding a piebald to bring to Zietsch. He said he did not know the boy's name, but that he resided some-where at South Grafton. On reading the warrant to accused he limply replied "Yes."
Henry Zietsch stated that accused came to him and asked him for a job, and on being informed that he had no work to give him, he asked for the loan of a horse to go to Southgate. Next day he lent accused a horse, saddle, and bridle, valued at £8 10s, on con-dition that he returned them in the evening and that he took care of them, which accused promised to do.
William H. Davis, coach proprietor at Casino, stated on the 8th instant he saw accused, at Coraki. He had a pony, saddle, and bridle, and asked witness if he wanted
a man to drive the coach, and he replied he ,did not at that time. He asked accused if he would sell the pony, and he said he would. Next morning he bought the pony, saddle, and bridle for £5, paying accused 10s 6d deposit, for which accused gave him a receipt(produced). On reaching Casino, accused received the balance of the purchase money, for which he gave a receipt in full.
Accused pleaded guilty, and said the reason he sold the horse was because he wanted money to go to Sydney.
He was sentenced to one month's imprison-ment in Grafton gaol, The sum of £3 12s 9d found on accused was ordered to be handed to Davis, and the horse, saddle, and bridle to Zietsch.

Improvements to Roche's Hotel.
Mr. H. Zietsch (who recently purchased the hotel known as Holmsten's, of which Mrs Roche is licensee) is carrying on extensive improvements, for which tenders are called in this issue. The plans are prepared by Messrs. Strauss Bros,, provide for an ex-tension of 33 feet along Victoria-street, and a depth of 44 feet. The additions will be of brick, and on the lower floor will be six bedrooms, parlor; and dining room. On the second storey there will be seven bed-rooms, parlor, linen and bath rooms. Water and gas will be laid on throughout. The rooms will be large and roomy, and the new addi-tion will have balcony front and back, be-ing continuations of the present structure. The appearence and accommodation of the hotel will be much enhanced by the proposed improvements, and the proprietor is evident-ly satisfied that the increased requirements of the trade warrant the outlay incurred by the substantial additions he is making for the convenience of travellers and board-ers. Besides the above, a large sample room, 60 x 16ft., is at present being erected on the hotel promises, and this has frontage to Victoria Street.
