Let We Forget

Let we forget that some people who worked in the most secret of places during the war did so for a country during war even though their country though that their homosexual life style was “gross act of indecency” such as Alan Turing and tried to modify their errant behaviour by chemical [...]

Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree

Well there was a tragic copyright case recently. On Spicks and Specks, they pointed out how an iconic Australian rock song contained a section that was lifted from Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum tree. So the owners of the copyright took Australian Crawl to court and won. Only then did it become known that the tune was stolen by Marion Sinclair from a welsh folk song. So now the question has to arise, how will Marion’s estate pay back all those illegally gathered royalties?

A strange fascination with Nationalities

A recent aeroplane crash reminded me of something that has been bugging me for sometime. I have been watching over the last decade as a need to seems to have developed to state the nationality of the deceased. Maybe they did it before and I had not noticed. But I think it is strange. I guess it falls into the category of, should I be worried. If I am an Australian and there are no dead Australians, then I need not worry that one of the dead may not be someone I know. An Australia Day Missive

Well as all pundits get on with their self appointed task of telling everyone how great Australia is, it is a good time for reflection on all the other bits. I have never believed in Nationalism. I am not against national governments. I just think that they are a stepping stone along the way in the evolution of the governance of the planet and we need to move on. A few years back I spent Australia day with the Pom who had just turned ozzie on the Central Coast. I did not believe how many Australian flags I saw flying. You don’t get that in the city.

shopping around for religion

Church at Lerum, by philblackburn

If you apply some free market theory to religion, then, if you are after a religious experience you should shop around to find the one that suits what you want out of life. So if you are gay, perhaps the better thing to do is find [...]

Mary Mackillop

Now, I don’t doubt that Mary was a good person. But I do not believe in miracles. Particularly ones that involve faith healing of serious disease. It is good to have belief that you will get better, and there is without a doubt a placebo effect and a need for motivation to [...]
