Before there were Maternity Hospitals there were Lying In Hospitals. The Dublin Lying In Hospital<\/a>, now known as the Rotunda Hospital<\/a>, was the second such hospital. But it is the famous one after which other maternity hospitals are based.<\/p>\n

My fourth great grandfather – James MacCabe M.D., T.C.D., Esq.<\/a> was an assistant there from 27 January 1807 to 2 February 1810. He was qualified midwife from 6 May 1809 as registered by the Kings and Queens College of Physicians in Ireland.<\/p>\n

The term of office of John Breen, one of the assistant masters, ended on August 3rd<\/sup>, 1806, and in accordance with custom the Master nominated to the Board Mr. Edward Frizell as his successor. It is not recorded what objection there was to Frizell, but the Board, by a majority of three to one, refused the nomination. At the next meeting on September 4th<\/sup> the Master again nominated him, and by a majority of five to four the Board decided to adjourn the question to the quarterly meeting in November. It would seem that is was the medical Governors, Drs. Clarke, Evory, James Cleghorn and Croker King, who raised the objection, and it is probably that this objection was based on the qualification of the candidate. At the meeting in November Dr. Kelly withdrew Frizell\u2019s name, but nominated him again on January 7th<\/sup>, 1807, and \u201cthe question being therefore pit it passed in the negative.\u201d This would seem to have been a serious reflection on the Master, but at the next meeting in January 27th<\/sup> he proposed Dr. James MacCabe, and \u201che being duly qualified,\u201d was elected.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
