He obtained special approval from his father to join the RAAF.<\/p>\n<h3>27 Mar 1941<\/h3>\n<p>No. 3 SJ\u2019S <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ultimo,_New_South_Wales\">Ultimo<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>26 Jun 1941 <b>1ES<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.awm.gov.au\/people\/roll-search\/roll_of_honour\/?unit_nostem=1+Engineering+School+Ascot+Vale&amp;op=Search\">Ascot Vale 1 Engineering Schoo<\/a>l <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ascot_Vale,_Victoria\">Ascot Vale<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>2 Oct 1941 <b>2SFTS Wagga Wagga <\/b><\/h3>\n<p>No. 2 Service Flying Training School (No. 2 SFTS) was a flying training school of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) that operated during World War II. It was formed in July 1940, under the command of Wing Commander Frederick Scherger. Responsible for intermediate and advanced instruction of pilots under the Empire Air Training Scheme (EATS), the school was based at RAAF Station Forest Hill near Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, and operated CAC Wirrawayand Avro Anson aircraft. The Ansons were phased out in July 1941, and the school became an all-Wirraway unit. In 1942 the RAAF divided the personnel and equipment of No. 2 SFTS between Nos. 5 and 7 Service Flying Training Schools at Uranquinty and Deniliquin, respectively. No. 2 SFTS was disbanded that April, and the base facilities taken over by No. 5 Aircraft Depot.<\/p>\n<h3>6 Dec 1941 2AD Richmond<\/h3>\n<h3>No. 2 Aircraft Depot<\/h3>\n<p>2AD was assembling aircraft such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lockheed_Hudson\">Hudson Bombers<\/a> and Mosquitoes.<\/p>\n<h3>2 Sep 1942 1ES Ascot Vale<\/h3>\n<h3>17 Nov 1942 2AD Richmond<\/h3>\n<h3>15 Nov 1944 2 Cent Rec Depot<\/h3>\n<h3>17 Mar 1945 No. 2PD B.Park<\/h3>\n<p>Personnel Depot Bradfield Park<\/p>\n<h3>1 May 1945 1RPP No. 1<\/h3>\n<p>Reserve Personnel Pool (1RPP) RAAF was established on 12 November 1942 under the command of Squadron Leader F.A. Martyn. The unit was initially based at &#8220;The Weir&#8221; at Aitkenvale in Townsville.<\/p>\n<h3>7 Jun 1945 No. 5 Squadron<\/h3>\n<p>Bougainville<br \/>\nOn 11 November 1944,[5]<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/No._5_Squadron_RAAF\">No. 5 Squadron<\/a> was deployed to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Piva_Airfield\">Piva Airfield<\/a> at Torokina on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bougainville_Island\">Bougainville <\/a>under No. 84 (Army Co-operation) Wing, and operated with units of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, undertaking reconnaissance, artillery observation, ground attack, and aerial resupply missions in support of Australian ground troops fighting against the Japanese on the island.
