Mr William Charles Martin, a resident of Kilmore since 1862. died on Saturday even-ing last, after a long illness. He was a native of Guernsey, and spent his early life at sea. He joined the British Navy and saw a good deal of active service. In 1854he was in his first engagement, when trouble occurred at Comanche (North America), but it was only a small affair. In 1857 he was on the Indian station when the British were fully engaged in suppressing the mutiny of Sepoys He was invalided home from India with numbers of blue jackets, and after a brief period of peace trouble broke out in North China. This was in 1860, and he was in the thick of the storming of Taku Forts. Numbers of prisoners were taken, and so that the Chinese could not run away the blue jackets tied them together in batches by their pigtails. The Jack tars also cleaned their guns with maindarins' silk gowns-and got an extra good polish on. Whilst seizing a Chinese junk with others deceased was speared through one foot by the Chinese being underneath the bamboo deck and thrusting their spears through it. After the fall of Taku complete preparations were made for the bombardment of Pekin, but the Chinese sought for and obtained peace before their city was destroyed. Most of the British squadron then returned to England, and deceased shortly afterwards retired from the navy and received his discharge. Mr Martin came to Victoria in the sailing ship William Duthie, a vessel that was a wedding present to its master, John Duthie. Having received his discharge at Melbourne, deceaseld came straight to Kilmore, and shortly afterwards took employment in the cordial factory of the late Mr John Benbow Key, the factory at that time being situate in Sydney street, directly opposite Mr F.G. Wallder's premises. After a time he leased the business from Mr Key, and three years later became sole proprietor, con-ducting it as such for the past 38 years. His business was his hobby, and from the old time aerated water machinery he built up a plant second to none in the provinces. Mr Martin, who was 74 years of age, was rather retiring in disposition, and never sought any part in public affairs, although he took keen interest in them. He was a Past Master of the local Masonic Lodge, and Past Grand Master and Purple Officer of the M.U.I.O.O.F., and also a member of the Kilmore Cemetery Trust. Deceased was a man in the proper sense-straightforward, Sterling, and conscientious almost to 'a fault, and his word-was his bond, consequently he was held in high esteem and respect. He leaves a widow and one surviving daughter to mourn the loss of an indulgent husband and father, and deep sympathy is expressed with them in their bereavement. The re-mains were interred in the Church of Eng-land portion of the Kilmore cemetery on Monday, being previously taken to Christ Church, of which deceased was a devoted adherent Rev. A. J. Peck read the service at the church and grave, and Past Grand Master Wortley read the burial service of the Oddfellows' Lodge, members of which preceded the funeral.

… The chemistry business of John Benbow Key was taken over by Stillman and Co. After the for-mer's death, the late W. C. Martin, an employee, became proprietor of the aerated waters and cordial business, the factory having been previously removed from Sydney street to the present site in Gipps street, about 60 years ago. Mr Martin carried on the trade successfully for about 40years, to the time of his death, after which his widow continued the manu-factory for several years. …

There are other people in this site, for various reasons, some not related at all. Some are married into my family, some I once thought were related and, turns out, they are not.

On the Aborigines: Unfortunately, I can only place global statements not he web pages. The aborigines I am aware of are in the Blackman Line and are from the children of James Blackman and Elizabeth Harley.
