NOT DISAP- POINTED
AN AUSTRALIAN VOLUNTEER's LETTER. BEFORE THE NEW GUNIEA ENCOUNTER. BATHURST (N.S.W.), Monday, Private C. Duchatel,-a son of Alderman Duchatel who it is probable participated in the fight resulting in the capture of German New Giunea, by the Australian expeditionary force,- writes as follows to his father, under date: August 25:\emdash "On August 16 we left Thursday Island with the volunteer expeditionary force for ser vice in the Pacific Ocean. I Volun- teered for any old thing that comes along while we are on ser-vice, so of course I went. The troops have been working hard, but we are having plenty of swimming, as there are plenty of baths here. We are having boat drill, under instructions by sailors. So far as rumour goes, I think when we are ready to sail from Port Moresby it will be for German New Gui- nea, where we expect something will be doing. They are organising a company of men as scouts, so I am hopped in there too. The boat is fairly crowded, and not a few have been seasick. About 200 wollly- headed Papuans are coaling the ships and kicking up no end of row. I came along for the usual experience, and am not dissappointed.

There are other people in this site, for various reasons, some not related at all. Some are married into my family, some I once thought were related and, turns out, they are not.

On the Aborigines: Unfortunately, I can only place global statements not he web pages. The aborigines I am aware of are in the Blackman Line and are from the children of James Blackman and Elizabeth Harley.
