Young Rider's Race Success
Randwick trainer Keith Duggan was so impressed with the promise of his apprentice, Neville Balgowan, that he leased two horses so as to give the lad experience in race riding.
Duggan was rewarded at Gosford yesterday when one of the pair, Soft Soap, rid- den by Balgowan, won the Three-Year-Old Maiden Handicap.
Soft Soap, a three-year-old filly by Double Remove (imp.) from Coax, started at 10-1.
The other filly secured by Dug- gan was Bye and Bye. who is engaged in the Two-Year-Old Maiden Handicap for fillies at Rosehill to-morrow.
Duggan leased the fillies be- cause he thought it unwise to tutor the apprentice on horses owned by his clients.
Balgowan came from Cowra, where he was the champion boy rider of the district for many years.
He won a number of prizes in show events.
Three years ago, Balgowan came to Sydney, hoping to be- come a jockey.
He was taken in hand by Dug- gan, and, after showing promise, was indentured to that trainer.
Balgowan has now had 22 rides in races for two wins.
His first win was on Greyling at Kembla Grange on June 5 last year.
Duggan said yesterday that Balgowan was available for a mount in the Auburn Mixed Stakes at Rosehill to-morrow.
This race is restricted to ap- prentice jockeys who have, not ridden more than five winners.

Neville has answer to big question
By TOM MUON, Argus Racing Editor
YOU can argue the question of which is the best two-year-old in Australia until you're black in the face, but I can introduce you to a young man who will give you the answer without the slightest hesitation.

Neville Balgowan inspects Aboukir's leg.
Most racegoers im- mediately plump for the unbeaten Sydney colt Kingster, but my young friend just laughs at that.
He goes for the Syd-ney colt Aboukir.
Because my friend is former jockey 23-year- old Neville Balgowan.
And Neville is personal valet to Aboukir.
He may, not be very well known in Melbourne, but his judgment of a top two-year-old intent well be worth "tuning in to."
He knows Aboukir backwards.
"I know Kingster beat him in the Breeders' Plate, and also in the Merson Cooper Stakes at Caulfield," he told me yesterday, "but wait until - they meet in the Sires' at Randwick.
He'll kill him!
"There won't be any doubts then - Aboukir will kill him."
Today, Aboukir will have a chance to vindi- cate Neville's judgment to a degree when he runs in the Sires' Pro- duce Stakes at Fleming- ton,
He may not be meeting Kingster, but he's up against Knave, and Neville is not the least perturbed about the re- sult.
"I only wish I could ride him today. He's a sure winner," he said.
Balgowan was appren-ticed to Sydney trainer Keith Duggan, and had 90 race rides, but in-creasing weight limited his opportunities.
"If it had not been for 'Abbey,' I would have given racing right away," he said. "But he's a 'champ.' He'll" be the Derby favorite when he goes for his winter spell.
"He'll prove that to you today!"
