The public examination of Englehart Peter Lawson, joiner, of Perth, was commenced by the Official Receiver. The debtor stated that his unsecured creditors amounted to £201 18s., and the creditors for wages to £11 10s. He had no assets. He arrived in the colony about eight years ago. He had been working at day work and building at Albany, Vasse, Bun- bury, and Perth. He had £500 in jewellery and money when he came to the colony. His wife also had £500, mostly in money she re- ceived from her brother's estate, and which she put into the National Bank, Albany. All that money had gone. She took up some land down there. 'That she mortgaged to Mr. Bumpster and he foreclosed. With the money she had on the mortgage, about £400, she bought cattle, and they died. That was about twelve months ago. He sold all the furniture and jewellery, but he did not know exactly what amount he got for it. He hawked it round the country. He sold it because be had no use for it. The money went to keep the house. He was not in work at the time, and his wife's illness cost pretty well £500 altogether. He only had one contract at Albany, clearing some land for the W.A. Land Company. He got 7s. a chain, and had 3 1/2 miles to clear. It took him over two months to do it. He had four or five men on the contract. He lost on it through miscalcula-tion and things being dull. He had only one contract at Bunbury, about £130, on which he lost also. Do you mean to say you have been taking contracts and losing on every one of them? - Yes. And getting into debt at the same time? -Yes, that's how I got into debt. What day work did you do? - I was on the forts at Albany for about twelve months at 10s. a day. May I take it you have been at work the most of your time ?-Well, I must have been at work to keep my family. Yes, but didn't you have the proceeds of your furniture, and the money of your creditors? -Yes; but eight years is a long time to keep a large family. Continuing, debtor said he owed Barnard, a storekeeper, about £22 for goods, Barnard got judgment against him, after which he left Albany. He took a horse and cart with him. A little before that he was getting ls. 3d. per hour from Donald and Donnell. He left them because he had finished for them, and he took the labouring off one of the cottages they had to complete. He was em- ployed at the Vasse by a man named Fry at 10s. a day. Will you explain how it is you owe all this amount and have nothing to pay it with, while all the time you have been receiving good wages ?-Yes, but that was only some- times. Sometimes I had work, and at others I had not. Tell me the number of times, on an average, during the year, that you have been employed? -Well, I was two months at the Vasse. Had you disposed of your furniture before that?-Yes. I was out of employment; also at Albany and Bunbury. But you say at Albany you were engaged on the forts?-That was only for twelve months. But you say you have been engaged at Bunbury and Vasse, and you are still employed there ?-No, not now. I have been promised a job to go to Cool- gardie. I left my work last Saturday, and I was getting 10s. a day. Continuing, debtor said he had no assets now. His family consisted of his wife, who was a cripple, and seven children, five of whom he had to support. It had not been his custom to hand his earnings to his step-daughter. She had never got any money from him. She held no money of his. She lent him £12 10s. for his insol-vency expenses. She was a music teacher once, and kept a store at the Vasse. She got something like £100 from her grandfather. Debtor never received any of it. He had none of her money except the £12 10s. already referred to. The only way he could account for his deficiency was the sickness in his family, and his being out of work. His wife had her foot taken off at Albany, and he had paid some hundreds of pounds to the doctors. He kept no books. The examination was adjourned for a week.
