VAN AND CART COLLIDE.
A collision between a runaway van and a cart in Pitt-street, North Sydney, on Friday night, was responsible for the death of Charles Edward Blackman, aged 11 years, who lived with his parents In Alfred-street, North Syd- ney.
The boy was seated on a grocer's cart, which was drawn up at the side off tho road- way in Pitt-street, when a two-horse furniture van came from Jeffrey-street, and began the steep descent In Pitt-street. The driver, James Jones, of Jersey-road, Paddington, put on his ,brake, but it failed to act, and the weight of the waggon behind them caused the horses to bolt. The van struck the wheel of the cart, hurling the boy to the pavement. His neck was broken, and deathwas Instantaneous.
