RESCUED FROM BLAZING BOAT
----*----
YOUTH BURNED
At grave risk to themselves two members of the Sandringham Yacht Club last night rescued Douglas Roughton, 18, of Gordon street, Hampton, when he was trapped aboard his father's blazing speedboat about 300 yards off the Sandringham pier.
Roughton had been cruising on the bay after dinner, and was re-turning to the moorings when the engine backfired. In a second the craft was enveloped in flames, and as he strove frantically to extin-guish them he was severely burned about both legs and on the hands and face. Almost blinded by smoke, and suffering great pain, he con-tinued to fight the fire.
Fortunately his plight was seen by two members of the yacht club, who went to his assistance and dragged him aboard their craft. They then extinguished the flames and towed the damaged speedboat to the shore.
After he had received first aid treatment Roughton was admitted to a private hospital at Brighton, where his condition later was re-ported to be satisfactory.

Driver Badly Burned
MELBOURNE, Wednesday.
When his speed boat, Hermoa, burst into flames 300 yards from Hampton Pier early this evening, Douglas Roughton (18), of Hamp-ton, was trapped, and nearly lost his life. He was rescued by mem-bers of the Sandringham Yacht Club.
Roughton received severe burns to both legs and slight burns to the face. He was admitted to hospital.
The boat was stationary when the fire occurred. Roughton apparently was trying to start the engine, when a flash back ignited the petrol tank. He was burned while trying to put out the flames.
A few minutes after he was rescued the boat was burned almost to the waterline.

There are other people in this site, for various reasons, some not related at all. Some are married into my family, some I once thought were related and, turns out, they are not.

On the Aborigines: Unfortunately, I can only place global statements not he web pages. The aborigines I am aware of are in the Blackman Line and are from the children of James Blackman and Elizabeth Harley.
