AUSTRIAN ADVENTURES
AUSTRALIAN SINGER.
NARROWLY ESCAPED
ARREST.
Twice during her two years in Aus-
tria, Miss Ruth Pearcc-Jones, well
known Australian lyric soprano, nar-
rowly escaped arrest.
Miss Pearce-Jones related the inci-
dents when she arrived in Sydney in
the Oronsay.
"One day I was walking home-past
Cardinal Innitzer's palace, when I saw
a large crowd garnered outside. I
turned to look at them, when I was
suddenly grabbed by the Nazi police.
They finally let me go after I had
convinced them that I was there en-
tirely by accident," she said.
On the other occasion, during Herr
Hitler's march into Austria, Miss
Pearce-Jones was driving along with
another Sydney girl, Miss Lorna
Smith.
"We were stopped by Nazi Storm-
troopers amid a great deal of excite-
ment," she said. "The reason, they
said, was that the car had no Nazi
flag. They let us go again when we
showed our Australian passports."
As a result of records of her voice
which she has sent out, Miss Pearce-
Jones has come home under contract
to the Australian Broadcasting Com-
mission.

MAHLER CYCLE'S
PERFORMANCE
BY NEVILLE CARDUS.
The concert at the Conserva-
torium last night was given dis-
tinction by a sensitive interpre-
tation by Ruth Pearce-Jones
and Alexander Sverjensky of
Mahler's beautiful song-cycle
"Lieder eines fahrenden Ges-
ellen."
The vocalist sensibly used the Ger-
man text. She has not quite the
naivete of tone called for by Mahler,
nor is her voice delicately graded in
colour. But she brought much intelli-
gence to her singing; she lived in the
words not only in the notes, and so
the moods of Mahler came home
poignantly.
In a Schubert group, Miss Pearce-
Jones was not uniformly successful.
Her voice is not impulsive enough in
modulation for "Fischerweise," and I
did not like the deliberate treatment
of "Die Post"-which suggested it was
rather late that morning.
In "Zuleika" she was much happier;
she apparently is best when the words
oí a song appeal to her sense of
character.

Why singers
like cooking
Ruth Pearce-Jones, Sydney
soprano, who will give a recital
in the Assembly Hall on Wed-
nesday, gave her views yester-
day as to why singers always
like cooking.
Asked whether she had any
hobbies apart from her art, she said:
"Well, like all singers, I really like
cooking."
"Why do singers all like to cook?"
"Well, because singers are always
hungry people! They work hard
and sing up an appetite."
"Then you haven't any fads about
dieting before you sing?"
"Not a one. I eat anything I like.
This idea about an egg-flip -
pshaw!"
Makes own clothes, too
Miss Pearce-Jones has another
hobby, if, as she said, it can be
called that. She makes most of her
own clothes. She has completely
"face-lifted" the English model
gown of black chiffon and quilted
chiffon velvet, sparkling with bril-
liants, which she will wear on Wed-
nesday, when she will sing with
Gunter Hirschberg, also from Syd-
ney, with Werner Baer as accom-
panist.
The soprano is not a newcomer to
Victoria, for she has given three re-
citals here and is frequently heard
on the ABC.

There are other people in this site, for various reasons, some not related at all. Some are married into my family, some I once thought were related and, turns out, they are not.

On the Aborigines: Unfortunately, I can only place global statements not he web pages. The aborigines I am aware of are in the Blackman Line and are from the children of James Blackman and Elizabeth Harley.
