OBITUARY
MRS. M. MARKS.
Mrs. Margaret Marks, widow of Mr.
James Marks, a pioneer of the Binda
district, died on the 8th instant in her
85th year. She was in good health
to within a few days of her death.
Mrs. Marks was born at Arthursleigh,
near Bannaby, and came to Binda
when 12 years of age. Her parents,
whose name was Robertson, were gra-
ziers, and were the first residents
there. The late Mrs. Marks and Mrs
McGuiness were, the Gazette says,
the first white women to enter the
Bigga district. The deceased lady
married in 1856, and her husband pre-
deceased her by 48 years. The couple
resided at "Markdale," the property
of Mr. Marks. There were ten chil-
dren of the marriage-six sons and
four daughters-nine of whom survive.
The sons are William, Alec, James,
John, McDonald, Walter, arid Rich-
ard, and the daughters Mrs. Sander
(Sydney), Miss Christiania (Sydney),
and Mrs. Megson (Sydney). During
their early days this pioneer family
had many and varied hardships to
battle with. When in reminiscent
mood the deceased lady has told
how, when her first child (Annie), then
two years old, took ill, she saddled
up, and with the babe in her arms
headed for Goulburn to secure medi-
cal advice. Unfortunately, the child
was found to be Suffering from diph-
theria, and succumbed to the effects.
The late Mrs. Marks must have been
a splendid horsewoman; for another
accomplishment she modestly related
was that when her youngest child was
three weeks old she had occasion to
make a trip to Bathurst. This was
done on horseback with the infant in
her arms. There were no roads in
those days, practically speaking. Bush
tracks served the purpose. Goulburn
was the nearest town for supplies,
and in cass of sickness there was no
doctor closer than Goulburn. The
district is much the poorer by the de-
mise of Mrs. Marks.

There are other people in this site, for various reasons, some not related at all. Some are married into my family, some I once thought were related and, turns out, they are not.

On the Aborigines: Unfortunately, I can only place global statements not he web pages. The aborigines I am aware of are in the Blackman Line and are from the children of James Blackman and Elizabeth Harley.
