BATHURST.
Tuesday.

The District Court was opened by Judge Josephson to-day. There were no cases of much interest, except the one James Watts v. George Hulks, for illegal detention of property, in which damages were laid at £50. Mr. Pilcher appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. Hellyer for the defendant. Some time ago plaintiff, a carpenter, was in defendant's debt for bread. His wife gave two boxes of tools in care as a pledge for the bill. The tools were afterwards destroyed by fire. The action was now brought for damages sus-tained through their loss. The verdict was for the plaintiff, with £10 damages, and costs.

VOTE OF THANKS
A vote of thanks was returned to the returning officer. '97 Mr. G. Hulks when acknowleging the vote stated that people were wrong if they thought a director's duties ceased after he had attended on subscription nights and initialled the book. He was frequently called upon to undertake duties of an un-pleasant nature. When valuing property they often gave offence if they did not report that it was worth the amount the shareholder applied for. If the shareholders were business men, such action some times cost them customers, but this they had to put up with if they desired to do their duty. He thanked them for the vote of thanks. The meeting then closed.

Warden's Court.
Thursday, April 12th.
(Before Mr. Smith, Warden of the Mining Court.)
Peter Flood v . George Hulks . '97 In this matter Peter Flood lodged an objection against George Hulks, under the 4th clause of the Mining Regulations, retaining possession of a mineral lease of 10 acres at Tom's Flat. The grounds of objection were that he (Flood) had secured the land before the applicant, and that while he had complied with the Act in every particular applicant had failed to do so, in that he had not posted a notice of his application on the nearest Post Office, hut at an office seven miles distant. The portions in question had been in his (Flood's) possession six weeks prior to applicant's claim ; he had spent £30 in working the ground and had sent stone to Sydney for assay.'97 Mr. M'lntosh appeared for the objector and Mr. Thompson for applicant,'97 Charles Thornton deposed that he was agent for Peter Flood, and produced an application for a mineral lease on 4th January, also miner's right held by Peter Flood ; have acted as Flood's agent for two or three years and taken up land for mining;|am now manager at Dark Corner; by virtue of mineral lease I pegged out a mineral prospecting area of 10 acres at Tom's Flat, about two miles from Yetholme Post Office ; I put the necessary posts at corners sot in trenches, also placed on a board in a conspicuous position " .Mineral Prospecting area applied for by Peter Flood" ; these marks are still there ; I worked on the ground for about four weeks, commencing on tho 4th February, another man was with me ; we were in search of minerals and have continued to do so until now ; have sent about ten tons of stuff for treatment to Sydney ; it was sent on 18th February , but has not yet been treated ; I saw Mr. Flood last week and he told me this 10 acres of the land have been taken possession of by Mr. Hulks ; they used two of our pegs, and put up a piece of tin on a tree notifying that George Hulks and party had applied for a gold mining lease ; the ground had also been freshly pegged ; no notice was given to me ; did not give permission to them to take up ; no notice was posted on the nearest post office, Yetholme; a notice was posted at Glanmire ; Glanmire is 7 miles away and Yetholme is only 2½ miles ; there were no notices posted at Sunny Corner Court, but there were at Bathurst ; the application applied for land on the east side of the Sydney road but this land held by me is on the north-west ; yet the notice were erected on our land ; I therefore object on the ground that the land was not pegged, that proper notice had not been given, and that the same land is held by mo under mineral license. To Mr. Thompson : I do not know that the application does not refer to this land at all ; I know the land upon which they put the notice is mine ; I took up the land on 4th February and commenced within 3 days ; for the last eight weeks I have been on it twice every week ; one of the workmen was William North and the other was my son ; a good deal of work has been done ; one shaft is 18 feet and another 15 feet ; there was an old windlass on the ground ; the tools wore on the ground when Hulks party took it up ; the tools were kept con-stantly where they could he used by the men ; North does not reside five miles from the shafts where he was working ; North was there or else my son all the time. To the Warden : We pulled up the dirt by a hand rope and did not use tho old windlass. To Mr. Thompson : The land had been taken up before by Mr. Beaver, and my elder son had an interest in tho lease ; he had trouble to get his share, and there has been trouble at the Warden's before ; there was no notice at Yetholme on the 28th March ; I bagged the stuff and sent it away to Mr, Flood in Sydney myself; some of it was taken from the 14 ft, shaft; I paid for the carting of it; I sentit on 18th February, but the parties could not get it treated ; I can't say whether the stuff is of any com-mercial value. '97 Son. -Constable Wright, Warden's Clerk of Sunny Corner, deposed that he knew the land taken up by Thornton for Flood under mineral license ; saw the notices on tho land on 28th March, when Thornton called his attention to it ; that notice was dated Jan. 4th, but the date of possession was given as Feb. 24 ; the land had been properly pegged ; he noticed that within the 10 acres an old post had been chipped on each side and set in benches, 4ft. 6in. and 3½ft. deep ; on a tree 60 yards from the south-east corner a piece of tin was nailed on a tree with the words painted on 'Mineral lease applied for by G. Hulks and party;' no notices were posted at Sunny Corner; Mitchell is only distant 11 miles from the land but Bathurst is 16 miles ; Yetholme post office was only 2½ miles from tho spot. To Mr. Thompson : Thornton was on the land when I came across ; I did not go at his request ; there had been apparently new work on the old workings ; which were extensive ; there were tools on the land ; did not see another man on the land ; I know North, who lives 1½ miles from the workings ; I twice saw North and Thorn-ton working on the place after the land had been taken up ; Thornton's son has boon working at Dark Corner during the last two or three weeks.'97 George Hulks deposed : that he was the applicant named for the land at Tom's Flat and lodged the application produced ; he went out to the land with Mr. Beaver. (Mr. McIntosh : The Silver King.) Witness lifted out old pegs from a cancelled lease and put them in again and also cleaned out the old trenches ; had received information of the old lease having been cancelled in June 1887 ; the pegs had been erected by a surveyor, and were of the correct size ; witness also posted a conspicuous notice on the ground ; and posted necessary notices at Glan-mire and Bathurst ; had not been there since ; when he marked it out there was no appearance of any. thing having been done on the ground recently ; witness did not believe anyone had been on the ground for three months ; saw a shaft about 12 or 14 feet deep which might have been sunk recently ; it was hard rock ; witness was a practical miner, and carried his swag for 13 years in Victoria ; did not see any tools on the land, but found a small pair of bellows. To Mr. M'lntosh : The notice we put on the ground was worded sufficiently, although the exact words given in the schedule to the Act were not used ; the names of the ' party ' were not given ; have taken up other land recently. '97 Charles H. Beaver corroborated the evi-dence of Mr. Hulks ; he had formerly held the land under a lease originally for ten acres ; the application was made for the same land, which was pegged and trenched ; witness knew all the old workings well, having had experience in that mine from the start, and could say that no new work has been done recently ; there were no other notices on the ground when the land was taken up ; when going out to mark tho land he met the man North on the Bathurst road, and he was not on the ground.

THE BATHURST RESERVE CLUB.
( 0 the Editor of the Bathurst Free Press.)
Dear Sir, '97 With your permission I should like to say a few words in reply to a letter signed " Member B.R.C.''which appeared in your yesterday's, issue.
To commence with, 'Member'-is bark ing up the wrong tree altogether, for he not only insinuates in his letter that Mr. G. Hulks is the writer of the letter to which he ("Member") replies. He (' Member') went so far as to tax me to my face that there was a letter in the Free Press signed ' Ex-Rifleman,' and that it was George Hulks .who wrote., it. This conservation took place, as ''Mem-ber" will well remember, upon the after-noon the Free Press was issued with "Ex-Rifleman's" letter in.
Now, to show "Member" that he is wrong in his supposition I with to inform him, for he has evidently overlooked the fact that Mr. George Hulks is not an ex-rifleman, yet and is still as much a rifle man and a man of mark as he ever was, for up to the present time his resig-nation has not been received, and until then he is undoubtedly a member of the Bathurst Reserves. This will, surely, be quite, sufficient to convince "Member," and his next door neighbour, that Mr. Hulks is not the writer of the letter in question.
' Member ' goes on to say in his letter that he informed , the meeting that as funds were very low it would be neces-sary to curtail, expenses. True, words to that effect were used, but slightly different, but "Member,'' could well remember that when I had made the second " pos-sible" I heard that meeting was to be called for the purpose of stopping the prize offered by the club.
"Member " very much regrets that ' Ex-Rifleman 'did not consult his friend " Bill " (that's me) '97 and you might have added a "Man of Mark," for nine con-secutiye scores to average 61 points, with four "possibles" in a month, surely makes me a ' Man of Mark.' However, as Mr. Hulks, is not 'Ex-Rifleman,' "Member" will see that he had no occasion to consult me.

I may , state that, my reason for reply-ing to "Members" letter is that as I heard, as I said above, that ' Ex-Rifle-man" and Mr. Hulks were one, and the same. Now, as Mr. Hulks has given me his word, (and his word is his bond,) that he did not write the letter ' Member ' is altogether out of it, and I trust "Ex-Rifleman" will come to the front and give it the denial it deserves.
I remain
Faithfully yours,
W. S. HODGE.

Smart Work. '97 Immediately following the death of Mr. Robert William Waters-Mr. George Hulks, the executor ; named in the will, communicated .with the relatives in Ireland. Two nephews were named, in the will, one of these being an inspector in the Dublin Detective Force. Mr. Hulks first wrote to him intimating the death of his uncle, and telling him to hold himself in readiness to come by the next mail. Mr. Hulks wrote a second letter, informing him of some of the provisions of the will, and that it was considered necessary for Mr Waters to visit Bathurst. On Saturday last Mr. Hulks received a letter from Mr. Samuel Abraham Waters, advising him of bis arrival in Adelaide, and stating that he would leave the vessel at Melbourne and journey by express to Sydney. He hoped to be in Bathurst by Sunday. This may be considered a smart piece of work, as it was only late in November that Inspector Waters died. Mr. Samuel Waters intends, as far as possible, to settle everything before leaving for the old country again.

Yesterday Mr. George. Hulks and family were on the river picnicing, and Mr. Locke, knowing that Mr. Hulks was a practical miner, and had had extensive experience, thought it a good opportunity to let him see what bad been done, and to have the benefit of his opinion. Mr, Hulks readily accepted the invitation and having entered the tunnel, had the face cleaned up, and then took out a dish of dirt. He washed this, and to his astonishment be saved about 1dwt of gold, which was water-worn. He says that there is a large quantity of heavy wash, and if he was managing the work he would certainly go deeper. The draw back to this, however, is the heavy water.
While Mr. Hulks was washing this dirt, five or six men came on the scene, claiming to be diggers. They were shown the result, but seemed incredulous. Mr. Locke then gave them the opportunity of trying some of the wash themselves, and they readily availed themselves of it. They then knocked down a dish and washed it, the result being equal to about an ounce to the ton. The men were then satisfied, had expressed an opinion that something good ought to be found. …

AT THE TOWN HALL,
Mrs. James Walker (Mayoress) and Mrs. George Hulks were the principals in managing the tea to the poor. This was given in the Town Hall, and was' partaken of by about 150 men. No pains had been spared in decorating the tables, and making them look as attractive as possible: A stranger on entering the room might well have been excused if he had mistaken the spread as a banquet to some distinguished visitors. Everything was done to make the guests of the evening feel that they were at home, and for a time, at least, forget their trial and sorrow. The ladies named above were ably assisted by others in waiting at table, etc, but one of the chief difficulties appeared to be how best to dispose of the superabundance of provisions sent in. After the tea the room was re-arranged, and for an hour or two Mr. F. H. Frazer entertained a large, spirited,' and appreciative audience with lantern views. At intervals songs were rendered,' the lady chiefly in command in this respect being Miss Donnelly. Miss Hulks acted as accompanist. At the conclusion a vote of thanks was passed, on the motion of Mr. Paul .'seconded, by Mr. White, to 'the Committee and helpers generally

There are other people in this site, for various reasons, some not related at all. Some are married into my family, some I once thought were related and, turns out, they are not.

On the Aborigines: Unfortunately, I can only place global statements not he web pages. The aborigines I am aware of are in the Blackman Line and are from the children of James Blackman and Elizabeth Harley.
