FINED FOR
ASSAULT
Pleading guilty, at the Lismore
Police Court yesterday, to a
charge of unlawfully assaulting
Robert Eric Cramp, on November
14, John Gerald Hopkins (22)
was fined £5 by Mr. H. Hawkins,
P.M., and ordered to pay £20
compensation. The alternative
was imprisonment for 40 days.
Sergeant E. E Hill said that about
5.45 p.m. on November 14, Hopkins
was with another man in Larkin
Lane, near its intersection with Keen-
street. Cramp approached them and
Hopkins pushed him aside. Cramp
later approached the other man and,
without warning, Hopkins struck
Cramp a vicious punch, fracturing
his nose. Cramp was admitted to
the Base Hospital, where he was
treated for his injuries.
Sergeant Hill said that Cramp's
condition was regarded, for several
days, as serious. He was discharged
from hospital on Friday night, but
had not since been able to work.
"UNPROVOKED"
"The assault was unprovoked, as
Cramp was not acquainted with Hop-
kins," Sergeant Hill added.
Mr. J. C. McIntosh, junr., who ap-
peared for Hopkins, said that Hop-
kins and the other man had been
drinking together in the hotel. Cramp
was pestering the other man for
money and drinks. He was told to
go away, but did not.
Some words were said, Mr. Mcin-
tosh continued, and the assault was
then committed. Both men had had
a little more drink than was good for
them.
Mr. McIntosh said that Hopkins
had been in the lock-up for 12 days
and he asked Mr. Hawkins to take
that fact into consideration when
fixing the penalty.
Sergeant Hill said that, as a result
of his injuries, Cramp had incurred
medical and hospital fees totalling £7
16s. He was asking for compen-
sation.

There are other people in this site, for various reasons, some not related at all. Some are married into my family, some I once thought were related and, turns out, they are not.

On the Aborigines: Unfortunately, I can only place global statements not he web pages. The aborigines I am aware of are in the Blackman Line and are from the children of James Blackman and Elizabeth Harley.
