James Troughton dies by drowning in the well of his own house. The inquest could find no evidence to suggest that it was not accidental. Maybe it was suicide? His wife was living in the infirmary at the time and all host adult children appear to have moved out so he appears to have been living alone.
Note: He was the groom to Sir Charles Augustus FitRoy, the tenth Governor of NSW from 1846 to 1855 and from 1853 also Governor of van Diemen’s Land, Victoria and South Australia.

INQUEST.-An inquest was held by the District Coroner at the Cottage Inn, O’Connell-street, on Thursday, the 8th instant, on the body of a man named James Troughton who had that morning been found drowned in his well.
From the evidence it appeared that the deceased was a native of Gloucestershire, and 64 years of age. He was last seen alive about 6 o’clock on the previous evening, when there appeared nothing unusual in his manner. On Thursday, a man named Freeling, called at the deceased’s place, and after some search noticed that the cover of the well was raised, and on looking down saw deceased in the water; on being taken up he was found to have been dead some time. The jury found a verdict of accidental death by drowning. The deceased has a wife in the Infirmary, and several children in the colony.
He was stud groom to Sir Charles [Augustus] FitzRoy during his residence in the colony.
