Retrieved July 17, 2014, from <http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article101573442> Police Court Wednesday, December 21. (Before Mr. F, A. Ridley, P.M.) THROWING STONES, George Cook was charged that he did on the night of Saturday, 3rd De- cember, throw a missile on the roof of the Royal Hotel. Defendant pleaded not guilty. John William Bradwell deposed: I am a constable of police stationed at Burrowa; at 11.35 p.m. on Saturday night, 3rd Dec last, I was on duty in Brial Street ; saw the defendant and another man go to the side door of the Royal Hotel and knock ; they after- wards went round through the gate at the side of the hotel ; I then heard two stones, thrown one after another, lodge on the roof of the Royal Hotel ; I ran around to the gate where defendant and the other man went, through, and heard two persons running across the gravel yard towards the printing office ; I went around to the front of the office in Brial Street, and saw through the window defendant, and another man in the printing office ; I waited for a few minutes and they came out ; I said to the man who was with defendant " What is your name," and he replied 'Cecil Cramp, I live at Crookwell ;' I asked him where he was staying, and he said at the Royal Hotel ; I told him to get away home to bed ; he moved away about 5 yards ; I then told defendant to get away home out of this, and also told him that I had caught him at last ; defendant said " I will please myself , " I then went back to Cramp and he said ' Please Mister, don't summons me, it was George Cook who threw the stones ;' I then went back to Cook and escorted him up to his gate. To Senior-sergeant Scott : There was no one else about the street at the time ; Cramp was working at Spring- field, and only had his horse in the hotel stable. To the Bench : I could not say where defendant was standing when the stones fell on the roof ; stonethrow- ing over in that direction has been go- ing on for a long time. To defendant : The gate you went through leads into the printing office yard, bat there is a gate from that yard into the hotel yard ; I could see through the printing office window, as there was only a sheet of paper up, and a candle burning inside ; I saw you and another man go up towards the Queens' Arms Hotel, before that ; I did not see you and Cramp come out of the Royal Hotel. Annie Crawford deposed that she managed the Royal Hotel, Burrowa, for her mother, who is the licensee ; remember Saturday night, 3rd Decem- ber ; there were some stone thrown on the roof between the; hours of half past eleven and twelve ; I was going to bed at the time ; I could not say how many stones were thrown ; I was both frightened and annoyed ; I saw defendant in the bar at closing time. To defendant : Several young men went out of the bar with you at closing time ; I did not notice whether you were intoxicated or not when you left the hotel. Cecil Cramp deposed that he was a laborer, and resided at Crookwell ; he was at present working at Springfield ; remember Saturday night, 3rd inst ; he was with defendant that night, and heard two stones fall on the roof of the Royal Hotel ; I could not say for cer- tain who threw the stones ; we walked up to the printing office, door, and just as I was insider the door, I heard the stones fall on the roof ; defendant was about 8 yards from the printing office, door ; CunstableBradwell asked me if I threw any stones ; I told him that George Cook must have, thrown them, as I didn't ; I did not see anyone about at the time when the stones were thrown : it was about half-past eleven ; I told Constable Bradwell that I was staying at the Royal Hotel ; I was not stopping the night ; when Constable Lord served me with a subpoena, he said " Cook mast have been silly to throw those stones," and I said ' Yes ;' I had a talk with Cook this morning, but no other since the occurrence ; we went into the printing office to get some matches from Arthur Satchell ; I do not know anyone at the printing office ; there is a gate leading from the printing office yard into, the hotel yard. To defendant : There were others came out of the hotel with you and I, at closing time ; we went up to the refreshment room, and afterwards came back and went into the printing office, where we were about half an hour. Arthur Compton Satchell, composi- tor, employed at the " Burrowa Times " Office, deposed : I know defendant ; remember Saturday night, 3rd inst ; Cook and a stranger came into the printing office that night ; he knocked at the door and asked me to let him in ; I sleep on the premises ; I did not notice who came is first: they did not ask for any matches ; it is nothing un- usual for defendant to come in at that hour ; they did not stop long ; there is yard at the back of the office. To defendant: No one could see through the printing office window. The defendant said that be had no witnesses to call, and he did not wish to give evidence.
