occupation painter . He died aged 42 years as a result of a fall from scaffolding while painting. Inquest held at Newcastle on 18th Nov 1937 AG Chiplin Coroner.

Obituary in the Grenfell Record 22 Nov 1937
" The death ossurred at Newcastle of Mr WN Maher, brother of Mr Artie Maher of Grenfell and hte first digger who came back at Grenfell after the landing at Gallipoli where he was injured. Deceased was on a painting job at the Newcastle Hospital and fell off the scaffolding , dying from the injuries. He was buried on Armistice Day. A widow and daughter survive."

bullet  Noted events in his life were:

• Military: Cordial Maker, Between 1914 and 1916, Gallipoli, , Çanakkale, Turkey. 2 William enlisted in WW1 in August 1914 giving his occupation as cordial maker and naming Hazel as NOK ( given as "sister" in records). He was 5ft 5in with dark complexion and hair. He was missing the little finger on his left hand . He was badly wounded at Gallipoli and discharged in 1916 after convalesence in Cairo. Service Number 1356 and served in the 3rd Battalion.

• Registration: Electrol Roll, 1930. 2 In the 1930 Australian Electoral Rolls, William is living with wife Leila Gladys at 26 Hunter Street West Maitland. His occupation is billiard-saloon keeper.

• Registration: Electrol Roll, 1936, Stockton District, New South Wales, Australia. 2 In the 1936 Australian Electoral Rolls, William is living at 40 Hereford Street Stockton with wife Leila . His occuption is painter.

• Registration: Death, 1937, Newcastle District, New South Wales, Australia. 2 25657/1937 MAHER WILLIAM NICHOLAS NICHOLAS ALICE NEWCASTLE
