My third Great Grand Father – William Marks, bought the property “Salem Vale” and renamed it Markdale. Here is some info from that time:
MARKDALE.
(From our correspondent.)
Since my last the weather has been very changeable,
-rain, hail, snow, and sunshine, with now and then
a south-westerly buster, taking it in turns.
Our school has been made a provisional school,
under the regulations of the council of education, Mr. [William Joseph]
Newman teacher.
It is reported, that, one night last week, two
young gentlemen, names known, made their ap-
pearance at the door of a publican in Binda, requiring
admission, but it being after hours, and they being
after enjoying a “nip” too much, were refused.
They then tried to make an entrance at the back, and
failing in that also, determined to make the landlord
pay for their disappointment by stripping the clothes.
line of its contents, and carrying them away. It is
very probable that, instead of the landlord having to
pay for “their disappointment,” they will have to
pay for their own folly, as I hear warrants are being
issued for their apprehension.
