Got up early like everyone else. Rode into Bundaberg. Massive headwind for second half. On the way one of the tandems with a kid had some technical problems and Jasmine moved into a trailer while a boy moved onto the back of Adrian’s tandem. But later they seemed to have fixed the problem.
On the way the road was an unsealed downhill part where they were doing some road works. Both ambulances were at the bottom of this hill. I did not realise anything was wrong, but I learned latter that someone had come off in this section and had needed some tending.
I have to say I was disappointed by the attitude of the other riders. The weaker riders were struggling with the wind, but the packs would not give them any assistance. I tagged onto the back of a small pack in the worst of the wind and the assistance was great. I also gave one of the men with a tag-along trailer a tow for a km or two.
I arrived before 12 but missed the Sydney bus as it left before I packed the trike. 🙁 I thought the bus left at 2 pm and had been taking it easy.
Stayed in the first motel I came to, the Park Lane Motel. They overcharged me at $95 instead of the $89 they had charged the others. Had to wait for the room to be cleaned. Went to tourist information. Very helpful. Tomorrow’s being a tourist plans are sorted.
There were some other riders from CQ2010 staying there and we had dinner at Uncle Chan’s Chinese restaurant. I always feel sorry for Chinese places in country towns as Australians are not interested in real Chinese food or culture and they bend enormously to fit in with the local wants. I guess they do what they have to do to survive. Still, I was very impressed with the hot and sour soup. And the other riders were really nice. They were much older than I, and much better riders too.
